The Adkins diet has been around for a long time. I remember when I was first introduced to it about 20 years ago. My mother informed me that the diet would allow me to eat steak, eggs, bacon, butter, etc. I was an instant fan, and when I started it the weight practically melted off.

After I had spent a couple weeks of low (practically no) carbohydrates while I was on Adkins, I was supposed to move on to the next phase of adding some carbs to my diet. I didn’t going for it. I had lost too much weight during the first two weeks so I figured I would just continue without any changes. This is where so many people make the mistake.

Eating very little carbs over such a long period of time isn’t the intension of the diet, and from my experience, isn’t successful on a long term basis. In fact, after several weeks on very little carbs I found that my weight loss slowed down to almost a halt. Talk about being disgusted! Furthermore, by this time I had just about enough eggs and bacon that any human should have over a 2 year period! Honestly, there are just so much all-protein meals that you can eat before a bag of chips looks like a gourmet dish.

In talking to others that use the Adkins diet I was amazed to see that most of my acquaintances apply the diet the same way I did. It would be interesting to hear from others that have applied the gradual carb increases, and hear what level of long term success they’ve had.
