We hear about it all the time – do sit ups and you’ll lose that fat belly of yours, or walking will tighten up your thighs. People devote their entire work out plans around the idea that they can target certain areas of their body and sculpt it anyway they’d like. Well, this isn’t exactly the most accurate advice.
Look, weight loss comes from eating fewer calories than you burn throughout the day. Of course, doing special exercises (no matter what they target) will cause your body to burn more calories, and hence allow you to lose body fat. The problem is, the body fat lost isn’t going to be targeted to some specific area that you wish.
Everyone has different genetics and it’s these genetics that determine how body fat is distributed around the body and how it is taken off the body. Working one particular area through exercise isn’t going to make that area any smaller, but it can make it tighter because of the muscle growth.
Concentrating on spot reduction techniques or exercises will benefit in the sense that it will help you burn calories. However, a more efficient way of losing body fat is to forget targeting any special area and start a good exercise program and realistic diet program.
The fact of the matter is, most fat gain has nothing to do with the activity of an individual, but more of a diet problem. Food intake will ultimately determine the body fat composition of an individual.
