For all of us that were or are obese, and the requirement to enter this club is becoming are being met more and more each year as people (especially Americans) get bigger, we may start to wonder our obesity can affect our kids. Does that fact that I’m fat mean my Son or Daughter will be fat as well? This isn’t a hard yes or no answer.

The fact of the matter is that one person is fat for a reason. That reason is very likely to be that they’re eating more calories per day than they are burning. Now, let’s just focus on the burning part for a moment…

Each person burns calories at a given rate while resting. The burn rate also has a lot to do with body size. Add exercise on top of that and more calories are burned. So unless each family member is exactly the same size and does exactly the same thing and eats the same foods in the same portions they won’t have the same burn rate.

Now, each family member probably eats differently throughout their day, at least different portions. So you can safely say that you’re eating and resting won’t directly make anyone else in your family fat. However, kids imitate the parents, so there is a negative learning experience here for kids in families where the food choices are poor.

For example, if a son watches dad eat like garbage and do nothing all day he may think that is normal and tend to do the same thing, and thus get fat. You could argue that your food intake and laziness did not contribute to your child’s directly, but indirectly it definitely does.

There doesn’t have to be a genetic link to make the entire family fat. Look at studies that show immigrants tend to get fatter when they come to America. It just takes getting used to some bad habits, and unfortunately, in America, we like to eat bigger and bigger.

The best thing to do to control weight is to get on a reasonable diet that everyone (even the kids) can live with. This can’t be a super-restrictive no-carb diet. Kids, heck even most adults, will simple through those to the wayside after torturing themselves for a few days.
